Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What kinds of produce do you offer? On a given week you might find us offering any of the following: tomatoes, carrots, corn, basil, beets, melon, peaches, raspberries, broccoli, zucchini, eggplant, onions, arugula, kale, grapes, peppers, lettuce, chard, apples, oranges, sunflower, buckwheat and pea sprouts, radishes, cauliflower, garlic, patty pan squash, green beans, spinach, celery, kiwi, potatoes, grapefruit, leeks, herbs, turnips, collards, cucumbers, Asian pears, strawberries, stir-fry greens and more!Q: What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)? How Does a CSA Work?CSA is a way in which people from surrounding communities can receive freshly harvested, organically grown produce on a weekly basis and directly support local family farms. Here's how it works: Customers, called CSA members, prepay in the springtime for a share of the farm's harvest. Prepayment helps farmers cover operating expenses and ensure sales, so they can focus on growing instead of marketing. At The Natural Trading Company, our CSA members get a weekly box with between 8 to 15 different items, depending upon box size, member preferences and availability. Imagine getting the freshest food available without having to weed your own vegetable garden; eating in sync with the seasons; knowing where, how, and who is growing your food; and supporting an ecologically sound organic family farm! More questions and answers about the Community Supported Agriculture Harvest Box program can be found on our CSA page . Q: Why is organic farming better?Organic farming methods are environmentally friendly and support sustainable family farms. By growing our fruits and vegetables in soil not contaminated with harmful chemicals, we help you limit your family's exposure to unsafe levels of toxins. This is especially important for young children, who are even more vulnerable than adults. Further, there's growing evidence that organic produce is more healthful than conventionally grown products. Studies show that fruits and vegetables grown without synthetic pesticides have higher levels of naturally occurring anti-oxidants and cancer-fighting phytochemicals. Q: How long have you been operating your farm? The Natural Trading Company has been growing produce, wheatgrass and sprouts for Sacramento, Auburn and North Lake Tahoe residents, natural food stores, fitness clubs and juice bars since we began farming in 1995.
